The Trust which owns the Pillar is embarking on the restoration of the Dial faces which show Apparent Solar Time to within 30 seconds, a great tribute to the trainee stonemasons, our astronomer Gordon Taylor, letter carver Caroline Webb, and architect AD Mason of Whitfield Partners.

Supported by the Heritage of London Trust, Firmdale Hotels and Shaftesbury Capital, the work involves removing the crumbling blue paint, sealing and repainting. The most intricate part, being carried out by Kevin Ruggeri is restoring the gold leaf on the hour lines, the gold dishes and on the orb at the top which represents the Sun.
